Sania Mirza is currently India’s only hope for winning any type of international womens tennis tournament in the near future.
She started her career by being coached by her father Imran Mirza, at the age of six, turning professional in 2003. She is the highest ranked female tennis player ever to originate from India, with a career high ranking of 27 in singles tournaments and 18 in doubles tournaments.Since her stunning success, enrollments of girls in tennis academies and schools has risen dramatically in India;a country which is still rather patriarchally run.
But along with the fame has come tremendous public scrutiny.A Muslim cleric issued a fatwa banning her use of short skirts while playing matches(silly man!)Being the intelligent, educated, and opinionated young women she is,Sania once also passed a few comments on sex before marriage( a highly taboo topic in India and she kinda defended it). This resulted in an inane media brouhaha which resonated for a few months .
Last month, Indian police registered a case of trespass for filming an ad movie in a local mosque in Hyderabad. And the current scandal which has hit the Internet is of a model supposed to be Sania having sex or undressing;I ‘m not very sure.Although the tennis superstar has been mum through all the silly gossip, there must be a time when it get wearing on the soul for the 19-year-old prodigy.
But Que Sera Sera!
